  • Pulp Wood as a Cash Crop For Forestry in Ireland

Posted on February 6th, 2010 No comments

There are many different products that come out of a forest but there is only one real reason why a timber grower will start the whole process off and carry it through to the end and that is to make money. Wood, as a raw material, is responsible for the manufacture of over 10,000 different products. These products are varied. For instance, timber products go into the construction of your home, they go into making the furniture that goes into your home, or the wooden shed that sits outside in your backyard. The raw material that comes out of the forest also goes into the manufacture of plastic, fabric, and most importantly in terms of an interim cash crop, pulpwood.

Pulpwood goes in to the manufacture of all sorts of different paper products. When you take Irish forestry, the average age of a forest at its final crop is 40 years. This is a long time to wait for any kind of reward for all your efforts. But there are processes that happen inside the forest after 15 to 20 years that bring in some much needed and much earned cash. When a forest is first planted, the trees are planted fairly close together, approximately two meters apart. This is fine for the first 15 to 20 years. After this time, the forest will need to be thinned.

Before the thinning process can take place, the timber grown most have forestry access. So, forestry inspection paths are cut into the forest at hundred meter intervals. A grid system is set up so that the forester can assess the particular needs of the forest at that time. Once the decision has been made to thin the forest, about one third of the trees are removed. These trees will be the ones that are undeveloped, they will be the ones that are showing deformities, and they will be the ones that are stunted … that underneath the canopy of the other trees. Once these trees have been removed they will be put into the manufacture of pulpwood, fencing stakes, or biofuel. This gives the forest owner a much-needed cash injection.

  • Use Portable Beach Umbrellas

Posted on January 22nd, 2010 No comments

Beach umbrellas are made specially to dig into the sand well. They have a corkscrew ability to drill into the sand and stay put. They are larger than a normal umbrella for the beach and come in different sizes to cover between one and two persons. You can put up two for more coverage of an area. You can also use whats call a Beach umbrella tent. These tents for the beach are great for large family outings. They cover a huge area and give you plenty of shade for a great day at the beach.

In traveling you will see a lot of resorts already have beach chair umbrellas set up for you that are built in. Grab a spot early to ensure you have protection from the sun. Grab two if there are a lot of you. Reading a book and falling asleep under an umbrella is much smarter than waking up fried when you don’t have protection. We all want sun when we are on vacation but too much can ruin a very expensive trip. Be cautious and if you are going somewhere close buy a portable beach umbrella that way you can travel often with it and never have to worry about being without.

You can use a portable beach umbrella to use in other instances as well. If you have a game on a field try using your umbrella. It will give you added protection from either the sun or the rain. It is a great compliment to your portable folding chair for watching practices and games. I cant tell you how many times I wished I had some sort of portable shade with me at my sons ball games.

Never let an umbrella replace proper use of suntan block for your skin. Make sure you get water resistant block and reapply several times throughout the day. Also make sure your sun block has not expired. Have a great day at the beach, avoid being burned and use beach umbrellas

  • Waterproof Hiking Boots are Lighter and Drier Than Ever

Posted on January 15th, 2010 No comments

It wasn’t too long ago that hiking boots came in two varieties. Desert-style fabric hiking boots that were great and relatively breathable and cool in really hot environments like deserts but that got your feet wet the moment the going got damp. And you had proper leather boots that were great at keeping your feet toasty and warm in winter but unless they were really well made (and expensive) with few seams could still wet through if the going got damp enough. What’s more they were heavy and hot in warm and dry conditions.

Fortunately in recent years there has been a revolution in materials that has now produced waterproof hiking boots that are lighter than ever, cool in the hot and that still keep your feet dry, even in the wettest conditions. The main reason has been the breakthrough of breathable waterproof liners made of substances such as Gore-Tex and eVent . These usually work by blocking the passage of molecules of water while letting through smaller molecules of water vapor. That way your foot gets to breath and pump perspiration out but you can wade through streams, walk through bogs and spend half the day in snow without your feet getting wet.

I have mixed feelings about waterproof liners on boots and think that in many cases they are a waste of time. They can be damaged by bits of grit inside the boot. They don’t quite breath enough to let out all the moisture when you are really working hard in hot conditions and they often give a false sense of security. When it comes to serious mountaineering I think that good leather boots are the way to go. But for hiking, most people would be better off with much lighter boots than with serious mountain boots. This is because weight on the foot can lead to exhaustion quite quickly for people who are not used to walking in heavy boots. Durability is less of an issue these days too as fabric boots costs a lot less than leather ones.

Quality leather mountaineering boots may last years, but will also cost much more than a cheaper and lighter pair of fabric boots. For most day and trail hiking purposes, and even for multiday backpacking, a light fabric boot will more than do the job. There is now no reason when looking for a hiking boot not to consider a fabric one that gets most of its weather protection from a Gore-Tex liner.

  • The Facts About Hiking Socks

Posted on January 3rd, 2010 No comments

One of the most important facts about hiking socks is that they are one of the most important pieces of hiking equipment you can invest in, yet they are also one of the most frequently overlooked pieces of equipment.  I suppose it’s easy to understand why; they’re not flashy, most people don’t put a whole lot of thought into their socks, and unless you’ve had the good experience of trying on a pair of good quality hiking socks, (or the bad experience of hiking with crummy socks), they are easy to ignore.  Let me put it to you simply; you should not ignore your socks when hiking!  Let’s take a look at a few different sock material options you have to choose from when heading out on your hike.

Cotton – By far your worst choice.  Cotton is all natural and very comfortable for day to day wear, but it is the absolute worst choice for hiking.  Why?  A number of reasons.  For example, cotton does not have the ability to wick moisture.  Wicking is the process of pulling your sweat away from your skin and towards the outside of the fabric material, where it can more easily evaporate.  Doing this keeps your feet dry.  Keeping your feet dry keeps them comfortable, less prone to blisters and less prone to fungus, getting cold and other unpleasant things.

Secondly, cotton takes a long time to dry.  So whether you step in some water or simply sweat through your ’sweat socks’ made of cotton, they’re going to stay wet for longer than you would like. This can lead to an uncomfortable experience and not to mention wrinkly toes as well as the smell that can build up. You will definitely want something that will absorb any moisture or sweat. This will make your hike more pleasant.

A far better choice for a hiking sock would be wool.  Wool is able to wick moisture away from your skin and is a great material for thermal socks, whether you’re wanting to keep your feet warm in the winter or cool in the summer.  Wool also has some natural antimicrobial properties, so your socks are less likely to become ’stinky socks’ after a day (or more) or hiking. You can look for these socks online or at any hiking equipment store. Along with all of the other essential things you will need, these socks are a must.

  • Ultralight Combo

Posted on September 21st, 2009 No comments

An ultralight combo is a great way to catch your favorite pond species like panfish, crappie, catfish, and even bass, sometimes huge lunkers. The reason these types of combos and baits catch so many fish is because of the smaller profile presented to the fish, not allowing them the chance to get a good look at it. With larger baits that most power fishermen like to fish with, the fish get a really good view of the bait, and can quickly determine that it is a fake, or it is going to hurt them. With the smaller baits, the hooks are a lot less visible, and the total overall profile of the lure is reduced. Once a fish gets up on a bait while your using an ultralight combo, they are going to want to eat it.

  • Improvements In Artificial Grass Turf

Posted on August 27th, 2009 No comments

Every year considerable game time is lost in our local soccer competition because the ground is considered unplayable. This might be because the footing is too treacherous due to the muddy conditions that have made it uneven. It may also be because there is simply too much surface water on the ground to actually play on.

The alternative is upon us and it’s being used by more and more ground. The possibility of switching to an artificial grass turf comes down to a local council or a state government biting the bullet and allocating the funds to get it done. With technological advancements fixing health concerns regarding artificial turf infill and solving existing ground temperature problems, there are fewer and fewer reasons to continue to baulk at making the switch.

  • Proper Care of Poison Ivy Rash for Fast Healing

Posted on August 7th, 2009 No comments

Everyone knows what poison ivy does to a person.  It causes an itch and rash that sometimes can get worse, become oozing sores.  The proper care of poison ivy rash is essential to preventing the spread of the rash as well as preventing infection and scarring of the skin.  These are the steps involved in the proper care of poison ivy rash:

    1.  Try not to scratch that itch!  While your mind is telling you to scratch, don’t!  Scratching helps bury the oil deeper in the skin, can cause it to get under your nails and then spread, especially when the rash is fresh and can lead to scarring and possibly even an infection of the area.  There are a number of ways to make the itching going away.  Antihistamine or steroid creams work well to calm the itch as do calamine lotions.  Oral antihistamines can be taken as well.  Benadryl is by far the most powerful over the counter antihistamine available but for most people tends to make them incredibly sleepy too.  Other more natural ways to treat the itch include oatmeal baths and compresses as well as some herbal remedies that work for most people.

    2. Treat the ooze.  If your reaction to poison ivy is strong enough that you are experiencing oozing sores you will want to keep these clean.  Proper care of poison ivy rash at this stage is critical as your skin is open to infection when these oozing sores begin to appear.  The goal should be to dry them out and there are a couple products on the market that can help with this.  You do not want to cover these sores with a bandage as it keeps the moisture in.   If you must cover them with a bandage, make sure to let the sores dry out as soon as you can afterwards.

    3. Watch for warning signs of a systemic poison ivy reaction.  These typically come from inhalation of smoke from burning poison ivy but sometimes people can have severe reactions to relatively little contact.  At this point the proper care of poison ivy rash requires a doctor visit.  They will likely prescribe a course of steroids to help reset your body’s immune system.  Prednisone is the most common steroid prescribed and the proper way to have it prescribed is with a large initial dose and a lengthy taper off of the steroid, typically two weeks or more.  The reality is, at this point your body is going over board and is more fighting itself than any oil from the poison ivy plant.
