  • The Puppy Pens Guide

Posted on February 24th, 2010 No comments

Have you found yourself lately thinking about puppy pens and what they can do for your pet? The truth is that there is more to a puppy pen then you might have ever thought about. Not only do these fantastic units help our dogs to have fun and play around but they also provide value by helping us to train our best friends.

On the surface level, the best puppy pens provide a dual function of providing a good place for your pups to play and be trained. There are all different kinds of resources available to you to help you figure out which solution may be the best for you.

A good alternative to leaving your dog either running free in the house when you aren’t home or locked up in a tight cage is a puppy pen. These pens will confine your dog into a smaller area while giving them more room to play and run around.

You can look into outdoor puppy pens and have your puppy play outdoors either under your supervision or when you aren’t home, and this, of course, is completely up to you and at your own discretion.

Lending hand to another popular use of puppy pens is for allowing your dog to have enough room to play with you in a controlled environment. Portable puppy enclosures are also available to take with you on the go which allow you to quickly whip up a self-contained area for your dog to play and be safe no matter where you are.

Whichever type of pup pen you end up choosing for your pet, it’s always good to check with a professional trainer or even your veterinarian for their input on the matter. You can never be too safe when it comes to your best friend!

  • Fish Tank Maintenance

Posted on February 20th, 2010 No comments

When it comes to setting up a house for your fishes, there are several things that you might have to get from the store. One of it is definitely the fish tank stand. Fish tank stands are essential because it holds the weight of the tank as well as the gallons of water in it. If stands are not used, and tanks are placed anywhere on top of cabinets or tables, the durability of the tanks may not be as long because they are more prone to accidents or leakages. In addition, the stand for fish tank also contributes to the overall decoration of the house. The next thing is obviously choosing a suitable tank. Different types of fishes require different sizes of tanks, combined with the other aquatic animals or plants in it. In a fish tank, oxygen level and the temperature are two vital aspects for the survival of these living things. As such, in order to have healthy fishes, regular maintenance of your fish tanks has to be carried out.

For daily maintenance of the tanks, observation of your fishes is one thing that you have to do everyday. If you are familiar with the behaviours of your fishes, then it is easy for you to detect any abnormalities that might cause future problems. Feeding of your fishes is a time for such observations to be done. However, a point to note is that overfeeding can cause damages to fishes too. In addition, if there is leftover food about half an hour after feeding, you should immediately remove it so as to prevent rotting and clogging of filters in the tank. All equipment in the tank should be checked frequently. This is because if these equipments are not functioning properly, they might cause pollution or sufferings to your fishes.

Weekly maintenance includes thorough cleaning of your tank, which is the inside of the tank, as well as the decorations in the tank. Algae are commonly found in these containers, and algae pads can be used instead of soap or other chemicals. Water should be changed on a weekly basis, but only partial water change is essential. If all the water in the tank is removed, there may be problems of toxic build up.

Larger water changes occur during the monthly maintenance. Water quality should be tested using the appropriate aquarium test kit. In addition, the filter should be taken into account as well. If you are using disposable filter cartridges, they should be replaced on a monthly basis as they trap harmful particles that may slow down the flow of water. Reusable filters should be rinsed using the water take from the aquarium.

  • Cats With Eye Redness – Cat Eye Infection

Posted on February 17th, 2010 No comments

If you have noticed recently redness in the eyes of your cat, there are some pretty high chances your cat is suffering from an eye infection. Infections of this type are a fairly common cat health problem, so it would be wise to get your pet checked immediately with the veterinarian to avoid further complications, especially if the redness is accompanied by an eye discharge. These two are symptoms of the infection.

Cat eye infections may look the same at first but they can be differentiated by the initial cause. It can be the result of a virus, bacterial infection or a fungus (Cryptococcosis). Immediate action from your part –this means taking your cat to the veterinary – is essential to minimize any damage done by an infection. There are some viruses that can cause an infection which can end up reducing the life expectancy of your cat to just two years!

Now, luckily the case mentioned above is rare. If we are going to talk about the most common type of infection, it has to be the one caused the Feline Herpes virus, which is also the main cause of conjunctivitis. This virus is mostly spread by infected cats quite easily, and rarely in the environment. Eye redness is a sure symptom along with discharge, but they will come along cornea inflammation, cornea ulcers, dried eyes, and eyeballs that get stuck to the lids.

Veterinarians will use antibiotics as the primary line of treatment against a feline eye infection in general, but a detailed treatment will be directed by a qualified veterinarian. There are some people who use the aid of natural remedies and even some over-the-counter products for treatment, however, these act only as a complement and not as a substitute of the entire treatment for the eye infection.

  • Get Your Dog the Right Dog Collar

Posted on February 12th, 2010 No comments

Dog collars come in several styles and in countless designs. Before pet owners start shopping for one, it’s important that they not only look for the “cute factor” they must first decide what type of collar is best for them and for their pet.

Most dogs need only a traditional leather or nylon material dog collar. Of course these collars come with fun details such as rhinestones, metal studs, paw print and even floral patterns but there’s much more to them. Fit is essential. The dog collar should sit high on Rover’s neck and should be loose enough so that two fingers will slide between the collar and his neck. Of course, it should not be so loose as to slip over his head and on the other end of the spectrum, not that this should need mentioning but just in case, Rover’s dog collar should not be so snug as to cut off his air supply or restrict his head movement. One more mention on fit; if your puppy is growing, so is his neck. Always be sure to periodically check the fit.

Small dogs and little puppies need small, lightweight dog collars. As your pet grows, depending on his or her size, it may be necessary to purchase a more durable, stronger style. Nylon collars are great for little dogs and little puppies. They’re lightweight, easily washed and won’t weigh him or her down. Lightweight leather collars are fine as well but they’re more expensive and if your dog is growing it may be wise to choose nylon until he or she is fully grown at which point a leather collar makes sense because it won’t need replacing as often.

If you have the type of dog that may experience breathing problems due to a pushed in nose such as a pug or bulldog, it’s wise to choose to purchase a dog harness rather than a dog collar. Since the harness pulls more on the front leg, chest area rather than the neck, it’s kinder and more gentle on the dog. It takes pressure off the throat. While the harness may take longer to put on before walks, it’s a nice alternative to the neck style collar for small dogs as well. Yanking on a small, toy-breed dog’s neck can injure or kill it.

Choking style collars or chain slip dog collars are for training only and really, should only be used by professionals. If you feel you have no control over your dog and need a choke collar – rather than choking the dog – take it to a professional dog trainer or at the very least, speak to a professional for advice and instructions on how to properly use a choke style dog collar.

    Choking is not nice.

If you are ordering your dog collar online, a good rule of thumb is to measure around the dog’s neck and add about 3 inches to that number to find the correct size. Also, when ordering, don’t forget that every pet should wear a pet ID tag. You can order one along with your collar for a nominal fee. Protect your dog with a pet ID tag and love your dog by getting him the right size and fit dog collar.

  • Buying a New Dog Bed

Posted on February 10th, 2010 No comments

A dog is man’s best friend in many ways. You like to run in the park, play football and maybe even swim in the creek. But where you are able to wash yourself properly and clean your feet when you come in, your dog is not. He will bring a lot of dirt in to the house and he will not only carry it on the floor but also in to his own dog bed or dog basket. If you will not clean it properly than the bed will be a focus of bacteria and fleas which is obviously not good for your dog.

The best way to increase your dog’s health and hygiene is by buying a new dog bed and throw the old one away. A new dog bed has many advantages over an old one because it is made from different fabrics that have many useful characteristics. The most important one is that the fabrics it is made from often have a layer of anti bacteria which will make it almost impossible for bacterias to outbreak.

Another advantage is that nowadays they are very easy to clean because you can just throw they in the washing machine to get them clean again. if you would do this with an older dog bed than you could probably instantly throw it away after it would come out of the machine. Yet another feature is that the materials are often water resistant which make it possible to also put the bed outside if the weather is nice. You don’t have to be afraid that it will get wet or dirty because they are waterproof and the dirt will come of very easily.

When you choose a bed for your dog their are many different types to choose from. Besides a washable you also want a durable dog bed because that will prevent your dog from tearing or biting the bed apart. But there are also luxurious options like the heated dog bed which is very convenient for your dog when he has arthritis or is recovering from a certain surgery.

If you still have an old dog bed than consider buying a new because not only will it save you a lot of work cleaning them, it will also improve the comfort and health of your dog.

  • A First Aid Kit for Your Cat

Posted on January 27th, 2010 No comments

A first kit is a must-have item if you are a cat owner. Cats, just like humans, are susceptible to accidents inside and outside the home, so we have to be always prepared in the case of a cat emergency, which can be something minor or something more serious. A first aid kit must come hand in hand with knowledge about some aspects of cat health like learning to recognize common sick cat symptoms and common cat health problems.

Some of the things a first aid kit for cats must contain include: scissors, tweezers, examination gloves, hydrogen peroxide, isopropyl rubbing alcohol, rectal thermometer, elastic bandage, antibiotic ointment, cotton balls and roll, adhesive tape, lubricant.

These are just some of the basic items that must be included. Also, you have to choose a proper container to hold all the necessary items. When you go out to buy a container for the first aid kit, first make sure it is easy to open, in cases of emergency there is nothing more frustrating and dangerous than a container that doesn’t open easily. And second, be sure it is easy recognizable so you can spot it quite easily in the room you want.

When you buy the first aid kit, put in an accessible place; think of a place where you can easily point a stranger to hand you the kit. At the same time if you have children around the house, keep it out of their reach to avoid any problems.

If you don’t have a cat first aid kit yet, nowadays you can find basic kits already prepared for you in some pet stores and specialized cat sites online. This is a great alternative if you need a well supplied kit. As time passes be sure to replace items and keep the kit well supplied.

  • The Loss of a Pet

    Posted on January 23rd, 2010 1 comment

It’s the hard reality of life; death is a part of it.  And when it hits close to home, such as with a family pet, it can be devastating.  Many people will be reluctant to grieve outwardly as much as they probably should, and this is a real shame.  After all, a pet is a part of the family, and many time they have been with the family for many, many years.  It is no wonder that they leave such a tremendous hole in our lives when they go.  Yet, all too often, owners are not given the same kind of time to heal from that hole as when a human family member dies.

Of course, many would argue that comparing a pet to a human is simply not a fair comparison, and at first I would agree.  However, very often people are given time to grieve when distant relatives pass away.  Relatives from far away, whether it be true geographical distances or simply emotional distances.  Relatives with whom a person may not have spoken for many, many years.  Yet, when they pass, a normal grieving period is allowed and often expected.  Time away from work to attend a funeral service, and similar types of things.

Yet, when the family pet passes, many people will share their condolences, but that is about it.  Not many bosses would allow for work missed due to the death of a cat or dog (or at least not much, if any time).  But often times it is the loss of a family pet that leaves a bigger hole in our lives than the loss of a distant relative.  After all, they are a part of our every day lives for years, and they depend on us.  When they are no longer there, the void is very big indeed.

As one who is experiencing that void, I implore all you pet lovers out there to truly appreciate your pet today, even if they make a little mess on the carpet or wake you up before the alarm.  Trust me, you will miss them when they’re gone.

  • How to Clean A Dog Bed

Posted on January 22nd, 2010 No comments

A dog can be your best friend when it comes to loyalty, but when it comes to bringing dirt in the house you need to clean they will give you a lot of cleaning work to do. A dog likes to play outside and does not care that jumping in the dirt or swimming in a creek will make him dirty. He will probably bring the dirt in to the house and also in to his basket. For a dog hygiene is just as important as for men and that is why you need to clean the dog bed regularly.

Older dog beds are most often made of materials that will get dirty very easily. Luckily newer dog beds on the market are often made of different materials that are much easier to clean. If you have a dog that likes to collect dirt than you have basically two good options that might save you a lot of cleaning work.

    Washable dog bed

A washable dog bed is made out of materials that are waterproof. That means you can clean them with water without damaging the fabric. In this way it is very easy to clean the dog bed regularly without it taking too much time. The good thing of waterproof dog beds is that you can also use them for outside because even when it rains they will not get damaged.

    Dog Bed Covers

But when you have a washable dog bed you still need to clean it with your own hands. Buying a new dog bed will also cost you money which not everyone wants to spent. A more simple and cheaper solution to this problem is the use of dog bed covers. You can put the cover over the dog bed and protect it against dirt. If you want to clean the dog bed you can just put the cover in to the washing machine.

Both are excellent solutions if you want to spent less time cleaning your dog bed and more time playing with your dog.

  • Features of a Good Dog Life Jacket

Posted on January 22nd, 2010 No comments

Should you be in the market for a life jacket for your dog, you must be certain to get the proper jacket which satisfies the requirements of your dog. If you take your dog near water, on boats or swimming then a good life jacket is essential to protect your best friend.

One can find numerous life jackets for dogs for sale and the greatest concern is that it gives your dog the proper fit. Should the jacket fit too loosely, it is possible that your dog will wriggle out of it or what is worse, become snarled in it when swimming.

Since there are such a number of life jackets to be found, it could be a temptation to select the life jacket based on color or design when these qualities must be of lesser importance than a good fit. Furthermore, it is mandatory that the dog life jacket chosen for your pet is of high visibility such that it is readily found when in the water.

A leading-edge mesh netting underbelly will allow for good drainage and drying and will be more comfortable and healthier than the traditional neoprene life jacket as neoprene will occasionally create chaffing and heat exhaustion; however, neoprene is able to provide warmth in cold water.

Make certain that your pet’s life jacket is equipped with a handle at the top which will allow you to extract your dog easily from the water in the event of an emergency. It must be easy to remove the bindings on these life jackets and ideally you should get one equipped with quick release connections or Velcro.

Be it at the pool, at the beach, or on a boat, the knowledge that your pet is safe because of his life jacket provides you a comfortable serenity, lessens the need for continuous monitoring and gives you increased time to relax while letting your dog safely play in the water

  • Ultraviolet Sterilization

Posted on January 15th, 2010 No comments

U.V. Sterilizer Filter stands for Ultraviolet Sterilization. It is a process designed to kill water-born parasites and prevent bacteria and phytoplankton blooms in a fish tank or aquarium. It contains a special light bulb which emits ultraviolet “C” light, the band of ultraviolet light which gives us sunburn. Basically, U.V. sterilizer filter sterilizes the aquarium water as it passes through the filter, killing any water-born parasite. The result is a clear, parasite-free aquarium water. It runs 24/7 and is cheap to operate. It is critically important, if not necessary, for all fish lovers who want their fish to live many years instead of several months.

There are many reasons for a possible parasite outbreak in your fish tank. Adding a new fish, a fish changing its sex, or a fish dies, are just some possible reasons that throw off the “pecking order” and therefore cause bacteria or parasites to grow in your aquarium. When this happens, one, many or all of your fish could die, and that totally defeats your purpose of keeping an aquarium in the first place. Parasites are fairly common in an aquarium. At low levels, fish can continue to thrive and live for a long time. But when they reach a high and dangerous level, this is when the survival of your marine life is at risk. They may become infected with the parasites and eventually die. This is where the U.V. sterilizer filter becomes a requirement for any fish tank or aquarium. It prevents these parasites or bacteria from blooming into critical levels, saving and ensuring the life of your fish.

When choosing a U.V. sterilizer filter for your aquarium, sizing is probably the most important thing to consider. The general advice is to go one or two sizes up than the recommended sizing chart. Most sizing charts are based on aquarium/ system volume or the water flow through your fish tank. Undersizing your U.V. filter is useless because this doesn’t burn up or kill those unwanted parasites. Oversizing on the other hand doesn’t cause any problems. This method is based on “bio-loading” wherein when you calculate the water flow rate, U.V. kill rate and total system volume, you will end up with the same sizing recommended by the manufacturer.

Maintenance of a U.V. sterilizer filter is a once a year, 30-minute change of bulb and the O-ring and/ or gasket, and cleaning off the quartz sleeve or the housing of the bulb. After a year, the bulb loses its power and the ozone gas produced by some U.V. bulbs may break down the O-ring and/ or gasket which covers the quartz sleeve. The bulb housing can also gather mineral deposits that may lose the efficacy of the U.V. bulb. You can easily do this by wiping the bulb with a sponge soaked in vinegar and leave it overnight.

There are other sterilization methods that are as effective if not more, than U.V. Ozone is one such method which, when applied and monitored properly, kills those deadly parasites and bacteria effectively and completely. But unlike U.V., Ozone tends to be too strong. While oversizing your U.V. filter is fairly safe, improper application and lack of monitoring of Ozone can cause serious problems. A U.V. Sterilizer Filter on the other hand is a safe and simple application that doesn’t need monitoring. A simple but effective way of killing parasites and bacteria, ensuring good health and long life for your precious aquatic friends.

  • Puppy-Walking for the Blind

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 No comments

Puppy-walking is a fostering service for potential guide dogs before they are adopted for proper training. Walkers ensure that the young animals become thoroughly adjusted to home life and people. Away from the dog kennel run, they must also learn to get used to the hustle and bustle of town life.

They are house trained and taught basic commands but nothing complicated that would need to be unlearned later.

Skilled instructors work with dogs at the Guide Dogs for the Blind dog kennels for several months before they are introduced to their potential human companions. Then they have a few weeks training together with their humans before being officially handed over. Great care is taken to match dog and partner.

The GDBA is a charitable organisation which depends heavily on donations.
